Joseph Gaylord came to Grenada and built this retreat in 1966.A friend with a sextant discovered that the 12° North line of latitude runs straight through the swimming pool, hence the name. There are six one-bedroom and two two-bedroom apartments, each with shower and ceiling fan. Each has its own housekeeper from breakfast until 3 pm, doing the cooking, cleaning, and laundry. Groceries for the week are at an additional cost (about US$100), but some provisions may be returned; given advance warning the management will try to obtain specially requested items. Evening meals can be prepared by the housekeeper for guests to reheat, and several fine restaurants are within walking distance. The shaded garden contains a pool, decks, lounge chairs and hammocks. Tennis, kayaks, Sunfish sailboats and snorkeling gear are for guest use on what is seemingly a private beach. Fishing trips can be arranged on a private boat. There is a maximum of 20 guests and no children under 16 years are allowed. 12° North has its faithful returnees so it can be difficult to find a room in high season. Joe and his wife Pat are keen historians and on their travels around the island have amassed a collection of Amerindian stone carvings and remains that would put many museums to shame. Joe found some animal bones deep in the cliff next to the property; after carbon dating, they were found to be a species of capybara over three million years old! The bones are the basis of a paper by the American Natural History Museum putting forward a theory that at some time Grenada was joined to the South American continent, and the new species bears the name Hydrochaeris gaylordii in honor of the discoverer.
